SAT-TutoringSAT & ACT Mastery and Tutoring Expertise

I am a Yale graduate and full-time, private tutor with nearly 2 decades of experience tutoring students for the SAT and ACT.  I scored a perfect score on the SAT, a near perfect score on the ACT, and have a true mastery of both the tests themselves and the methods needed to most effectively prepare students for them.

SAT-tutorUnique Approach to the SAT & ACT

Most private SAT/ACT tutors and test prep companies focus on the “content” that is tested on the the tests. However, both the SAT and ACT are reasoning tests and so as the name ReasonSAT suggests, my primary focus with students is on the reasoning and critical thinking skills that the SAT and ACT actually measure.

Helpful Information for Newcomers to the SAT & ACT

The SAT and ACT are surrounded by more myths and misinformation than any other standardized tests out there. The tests have changed over the years and continue to change, so that is part of the reason that they are sometimes misunderstood. But the SAT and ACT Prep industry is big business and it draws a variety of characters, some honest and qualified and others less so. So it can be very difficult to sift through all of the information and misinformation out there to arrive at a really accurate understanding of the tests and how to prepare for them.

There are many test prep companies and private SAT/ACT tutors who peddle the myth that the SAT doesn’t measure anything at all and that preparing for the test is really just about figuring out how to game the test and use shortcuts and tricks. These companies and individuals play to the ear of parents who want to hear that, but the truth is that the SAT and ACT do in fact measure something – generally speaking they attempt to assess verbal and quantitative logical reasoning. In fact the SAT is actually called the SAT Reasoning Test (SAT no longer stands for anything). Not only that, but I would argue that many of the skills needed for success on the SAT and ACT are skills that will lead to success in college. Although my primary focus with students is on helping them achieve higher scores on the tests, a secondary purpose is to help students acquire the skills that will help lead to success in college and in life more generally. One of the greatest compliments that I often get from my students is that the lessons they learned in our meetings turned out to be useful outside of the context of the SAT and ACT (i.e., in high school, in college, or in life in general).

Below are some introductory posts meant especially for parents who are new to the SAT and ACT and the process of preparing for the tests.  A longer list can be found under the Blog tab and at the bottom of the page.  Of course these writings express my opinion, but its an opinion that is based on more than a decade of teaching and tutoring hundreds of students for the SAT and ACT.  My intention has been to provide an insider perspective on the exams, one that avoids the myths and over-generalizations that one so often hears with regard to the tests.
